- Communication – Taking the time to communicate your thoughts and feelings and listening to the other person’s perspective can go a long way in creating a solid foundation for a good relationship. It prevents misunderstandings that are often times the main cause of disputes, arguments and unpleasantness in relationships. It is a way to repair damage that is caused by other people and circumstances that may be beyond the control of people involved.
- Respect – Mutual respect is often taken for granted or completely ignored in many relationships. Respect is a value that is very often misunderstood. Each person has his or her own uniqueness in personality which is not always understood or appreciated by others. Respect is the ability to allow the other person to live his or her personality, without passing any judgments but being there to support them when they need that support.
- Trust – Trust, like communication and respect is a value in a relationship that is a two-way street. You must be able to trust the other person in the relationship, but it is also important to be someone who can be trusted. Trusting someone means that you feel certain that the other person has your best interest at heart. You can only be sure of this if the other person is open and honest with you. In the same way, you have to be open and honest with the other person in order to earn their trust in you.
- Support – Support for another person is the culmination of Respect and Trust. If you are able to respect the other persons decisions and actions and if you are able to believe in the abilities of the other person, you are in effect showing that you support them and will be there to catch them if they fall, without placing any judgments.
- Cooperation – A meaningful relationship involves some amount of give and take on the part of both persons in the relationship. Each person must do their part to cooperate
- Commitment & Responsibility – Each of us must have be committed and share the responsibility towards maintaining and nurturing the important aspects of a relationship.
Relationships are the glue that hold everything together. Nurture them. Treat them with care.
